Tire Inspections and Services Extend the Life of Your Tires

When you bought your set of tires, there was a mileage guarantee associated with them. This mileage guarantee is an indication of how long the tires will last. For example, if you buy tires with a 30,000-mile guarantee, the tires will last for 30,000 miles. J&S Auto Repair explains that there is a caveat to this, however. If you don’t take care of your tires, you won’t get the guaranteed 30,000 miles out of them. Let’s talk about tire inspections and services that extend the life of your tires.

Tire Inspection

Check your air and inspect your tires every two weeks. Make sure that the air pressure is correct in each tire. If any of the tires need air added to them, only add enough air to get the tire back to the recommended PSI. Overinflating the tires can damage them. Also, take a good look at each tire not only on the tread but also on the sides. Look for uneven tread wear on any of your tires. Uneven tread wear looks like circles, patches, or scallops. Check the sides of the tires for bubbling, cracking, or any other unusual occurrence. If any of the tires look bad, come to our shop right away.

Tire Rotation

Plan on having your tires rotated every 6,000 miles. This ensures that the tires have even pressure from the brake system and the road. If you don’t get your tires rotated regularly, they will begin to wear down unevenly. This uneven wear can shorten the lifespan of each tire drastically. Tire rotations help your tires wear down evenly so that you get those 30,000 miles out of them.

Wheel Balance

It’s also important to have your wheels balanced when they need it. A good rule of thumb is to have them balanced after they’ve been rotated. Balanced wheels give you a smooth ride and an easily controllable car, truck, or SUV. If your wheels are out of balance, they will begin to vibrate as you pick up speed. You will not only feel this vibration but you will also be able to hear it. Get the wheels balanced right away if they are not balanced.

Wheel Alignment

Wheels that are not balanced will chew up the tread; wheels that are not aligned will do the same thing. Wheel alignment is something that can be done every one to two years. It doesn’t need to be done frequently unless you knock your wheels out of alignment.
