Should I Worry About My Tires This Winter?

It gets pretty cold and wet here in Warwick, Rhode Island in the winter, so, yes, you should worry about your tires. We get rain, sleet, snow, and even hail, and you don’t want to drive in those conditions without the best tires on your wheels. J&S Auto Repair can help you prep your automobile for winter. When it comes to the tires, it’s wise to do the following now rather than wait for the first snowfall.

Measure the Tread Depth

Tread is what keeps your tires on the road when it’s raining or snowing. Tread funnels water through the grooves to prevent hydroplaning. Tread also cuts through ice and snow. Now is the time to measure your tread depth to make certain it isn’t worn down to 2/32-of-an-inch or lower. If it is, replace the tires.

Check the Tread Wear Patterns

Now is also the time to inspect the tread wear patterns on all four tires. If they are scalloped or otherwise uneven, your tires or wheels have a problem. Uneven tread wear can be caused by underinflated or overinflated tires, unbalanced wheels, or wheels that are out of alignment.

Consider Your Tires’ Age

Even if they still look pretty good, tires that are older than six years old should probably be replaced. The maximum lifespan of tires is 10 years. Miles aren’t the only thing to consider when replacing tires. Tires are made of rubber and rubber breaks down over time, even if you don’t drive that much.

Consider Necessary Professional Services

We might need to lend a hand, too. Your tires need preventative maintenance just as the rest of your vehicle does. Because winter weather can make driving hazardous and stressful, consider any necessary professional services your tires and wheels need now rather than waiting until winter. For example:

  • If you haven’t had your tires rotated in over 6,000 miles, it is time to do so. This helps the tire tread to wear down evenly.
  • The tires should be balanced after the rotation, as well, to keep the weight distribution even across the axle; something crucial on icy roads.
  • Now is the time for a wheel alignment, too, if you haven’t had one in two-to-three years. This helps improve steering and control.
