Everything You Need to Know About Automotive Fluids

Your vehicle relies on a variety of fluids to run smoothly and efficiently. Think of them as the lifeblood of your car. They keep your engine lubricated, keep your system cool, and even wash your windows. You may not think much about these fluids other than asking your mechanic to top them off until you notice a puddle or stain when you move your car. Luckily, it is easy to tell your fluids apart so you know when to bring your car into J&S Auto Repair for a repair.

Engine Oil

Engine oil is probably the easiest vehicle fluid to identify. It is amber or light brown to dark brown in color unless it has been a while since your last oil change. In that case, the oil will be closer to black in color. Engine oil is one of the most important fluids in your car. If you notice it leaking, make an appointment to have it repaired before the leak gets worse.

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid manufacturers add a red dye to the fluid to make it easier to distinguish from your engine’s oil. It also has a strong, noticeable smell. Transmission fluid leaks could be coming from the transmission itself or the lines that lead to the radiator.  Have your system inspected and repaired before you run into serious issues.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is an almost clear yellow but can darken to brown over time. It also looks slicker than other fluids. Leaking brake fluid is the sign of a potentially dangerous issue and shouldn’t be ignored.

Coolant

Coolant comes in a variety of bright, noticeable colors. It also has a sweet smell and its consistency is described as watery.  Some of the colors you might notice if your coolant is leaking include bright shades of pink, aqua, orange, and green. A lack of coolant will cause your engine to overheat and lead to more complicated repairs.

Water

This is the one you don’t need to worry about especially if you notice it during the summer when you have had your air conditioner on full blast. Water puddles under your car are simply from a build-up and dripping of condensation.

No matter what fluid you have spotted, if you are concerned about a leak in your vehicle call J&S Auto Repair today to make an appointment. Our team of experts will thoroughly inspect your car, repair the leak, and get you back on the road.
